MDC Preview: Connecticut @ Harm City

HAGERSTOWN, MD — The first season of the Men’s Derby Coalition hits its midpoint this Saturday as the Harm City Homicide (Baltimore, MD) and the Connecticut Death Quads face off in a match that will leave one team still winless and facing a very hard road to a potential berth in the October championship matchup.

Harm City 0-2
Connecticut 0-2

Upcoming Bouts

3 more dates still TBA

In the six-game MDC season, each of the four teams faces each other twice (the fifth MDC team, Puget Sound, joined the organization in mid-season and is not participating in the 2010 campaign). Harm City lost their season opener to Pioneer Valley 117-73 and then lost to New York in June, 171-105; Connecticut dropped their season opener 164-33 to New York and lost in May to Pioneer Valley, 138-55.

While a loss on Saturday technically wouldn’t mathematically eliminate either team from championship bout contention, they’d need a massive turnaround to win the remainder of their games in addition to getting large point differentials to have a shot, so this bout is all but a must-win for both teams.

Harm City has solidly defeated Connecticut in both previous meetings, though it’s been awhile since they went head to head on the track. In October 2008, Harm City thumped a very shorthanded CTDQ 72-23 in a 20 minute expo and followed it up with a 145-29 win in a 40 minute bout in January 2009. This will be the first time that the teams go the full 60 minutes.

Both teams come in skating a short roster of 10; this is the first year for Connecticut’s Double O-NO, Hit Happens and Karn Evil, while Harm City has two rapidly improving first-year rookies in Abe Froman and Locke Ness Tomster added to their longtime core.

After this bout, it’ll be only three weeks before the next Harm City / Connecticut meeting — they’re scheduled to play their second game in Yonkers, NY on August 7.

A 30 minute pre-game expo will find Charm City’s b-team, Female Trouble, taking on Richmond, VA’s River City Rollergirls.
