In their last, penalty-heavy meeting, Philly held the lead for the majority of the bout and despite a nail-biter second half comeback from Denver, Philly won by 13 points. This was the start to a disappointing series of losses in 2010 for Denver, who started off the season strong, and culminated in a surprise first-round elimination at 2010 West Region Playoffs. Philly would go on to finish second in the East Region, as expected, and came in fourth at the 2010 WFTDA Championships.
Denver has started their 2011 season strong, demonstrating their renewed strength at the Wild West Showdown by going 3-0 for the weekend, which included a nail-biting upset of Rose City and a solid win over Rat City. Philly went 1-2 that weekend with losses to Rose City and Rat City. However, Philly had a similar slow start to their season in 2010 at the Wild West Showdown to later heat up to a 16 game winning streak which was eventually put to a stop by the Oly Rollers.
Although Denver is currently unofficially ranked a few spots above Philly, the result of this match should by no means be considered a certainty, especially since both teams were in the exact same DNN rankings at last season’s meeting, with Philly pulling out an upset. Both the Denver and Philly rosters have changed since their last meeting, with Denver retaining 11 skaters, and Philly retaining significantly fewer. The Philly roster for this bout is notably missing veteran Shenita Stretcher, who was an integral skater in last season’s meeting.
On Sunday, the Liberty Belles meet the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls‘ 5280 Fight Club for a closed-door bout at Rocky Mountain’s training facility. This will be the two teams’ first meeting since November 2009, when Rocky Mountain eliminated Philly during the quarterfinal round of the WFTDA Championship Tournament in a 7-point nailbiter that culminated with an overtime jam. DNN’s boutcast archive has video of that bout’s electrifying final minutes, along with the full bout’s textcast.
Live DNN coverage of this bout is tentative, pending bandwidth testing.
