DES MOINES, IA–Upsets aplenty marked the opening day of the first Division 2 playoffs. For almost exactly a minute of this bout it looked like it might go the same way–but two huge runs for Sin City put paid to Dallas. They posted the biggest win of the day and progressed to the semifinals, 299-95.
Dallas raced into an early lead–but a major cut call on Anita Riot in the fourth jam let Bust’N Aces give Sin City a rapid 14-point lead as their bench willed them on to avoid being the victim of a fourth upset in five.
Dallas quickly began to rack up the out-of-play penalties that beset them in their win over Tallahassee and were held scoreless for the rest of the first fifteen minutes at Sin City went on a 66-0 run. A power jam let them in for five–but Geneva Conviction and Bone Eta held Rhinestone Callgirl and frustrated her into a back block that ended the power jam and restored order for Sin City.
A cut on Aces let Anita Riot put up a huge jam and cut the gap to 86-58–but when both teams had jammers on the track, it was still one-way traffic. Sin City closed out the half without further jammer penalties and duly held Dallas at 58 while racing up to 145 themselves.
Two Dallas jammer penalties in the opening jams of the second half started things off in the worst possible way. Sin City’s run extended to 120-0 as they continued their dominance of lead calls and they began to let jams run and run. With just under ten minutes gone in the period Anita Riot put up Dallas’ first points of the half and first non-powerjam assisted points of the bout to make it 206-63. Weapon X got two next time out after Dallas’ first consecutive lead call. But it wasn’t to herald a momentum shift.
A few minutes later Rosemary Raucous forced a cut on The Force–but Mona Bruis’r couldn’t capitalise. In fact, she fouled out with the star with 12 minutes to go–her second foulout of the day–as Dallas doubled up Sin City’s penalty total at 31 to 15.
Juice Box did take a advantage of a rare full Dallas pack to push the Devils up to 77 as Sin City broadened their jammer rotation with a view to the next two days, but it only served to marginally slow Sin City’s relentless progress to Saturday’s semifinal. A low block on Rhinestone Callgirl with second remaining gave Molly Tov a final powerjam–and she closed the bout out with Sin City comfortable 299-95 winners, seemingly oblivious to the crowd yelling at her to fix her loosening helmet cover.
Sin City progress to the semifinal tomorrow, while Dallas slip into the consolation bracket.
