The names of the final 32 skaters who will comprise Team USA from now until the 2014 World Cup were released today by team management in a joint interview with DNN and Derby Deeds. The original plan was to select 20 skaters now and hold another try-out in 2014 for the final spots–but the team management decided that it would better serve the team as a whole to announce the full roster now, giving the full 32 skaters more time to work together and bond as a unit.
Explaining this decision, Team USA’s Buster Cheatin said: “If we held off on picking our full team until February, at the end of some other tryout, there would be 12 members of the team who would have missed two thirds of our [guaranteed] practices. And that was a glaring problem.”
“We wanted one team moving forward together, rather than 20 plus 12,” he concluded.
Less than half the squad are skaters who have kept their places from the 28 selected for the 2011 World Cup; 17 will be pulling on the red, white and blue jerseys for the first time this season. These new skaters range in fame, including some of the sport’s highest-profile and most seasoned veterans, as well as relatively unfamiliar faces.
Some of the most experienced skaters added to the roster are Julie Adams (nee Angela Death), Carmen Getsome, Jackie Daniels and OMG WTF. While they are likely already household names to some, this may be the first time many have heard of either Melanie Pfister of Wasatch Roller Derby or Baller Shot Caller of Gold Coast Derby Girls. Other newcomers are Texas’ Fifi Nomenon and Polly Gone, Rose City’s Mercy and Scald Eagle, Gotham’s Mick Swagger, Oly’s Onda Sligh, Kansas City’s Trauma, Denver’s Jes Rivas and Shaina Serelson, and Atlanta’s Wild Cherri.
The team was selected from three two-section open tryouts held during the summer. A skills portion was open to all attendees and a cut was then made before a final scrimmage session. Since then, the numbers have been whittled down to a shortlist of 46. When challenged on the fairness of the cut after skills tests by DNN, Team USA coaches Buster Cheatin and Endless Justin vigorously defended their credentials and explained that the skills tests had been specifically designed to best reveal roller derby skills and weaknesses, rather than just skating ability.
If you want to hear them discuss it in more detail, you can listen to the full interview here, where Justin, Buster and Katie Mae Peters take questions posed by DNN and Derby Deeds and discuss the challenges facing Team USA, the World Cup versus The Hydra, rule sets, tryouts and much more.
