Another month has passed, but we won’t see more rankings released publicly until after playoffs. With a week and a half until the first D2 tournament, more upsets are indicating that there may be some busted brackets on the horizon. If you aren’t traveling to see D2s this year, you will have to pay to watch on WFTDA.tv, at $7 per weekend.

Last weekend, the derby Internet was exploding with RollerCon photos, stories, and general shenanigans. In the midst of RollerCon fun, there were a few games of D2 significance happening as well as several others across the country. With two weeks to go until the first D2 playoffs, these games will not directly impact the 2014 season, but have the potential to help teams maintain momentum going into playoffs and also set a tone for 2015.

The B-Roll: July 24, 2014, Introducing Big Easy Rollergirls Suburbia vs DC Rollergirls

We are just over three weeks out from the first D2 playoff and things are still a bit quiet, with one exception– an upset by Suburbia over DC. Sacred City also made a public announcement on Facebook as to why they declined their playoff invite citing high costs, but they will be the hosts for the first D1 playoff, September 5-7. Their response rounds out the three declining teams, including Sac City and the Oly Rollers.

With the release of the official 2014 playoff brackets and new rankings this week, we now have the full tournament picture as we make our way to the Hydra.  There were a few Division 2 surprises, such as both Sacramento teams declining their D2 playoff invitations, as the Oly Rollers did for Division 1.

After the quiet of Independence Day weekend, things are back into full swing this weekend as teams across WFTDA start their playoff preparations in earnest–and, perversely, play the first bouts that count towards 2015 playoff qualification.
