MILWAUKEE, WI – the battle for third place at WFTDA Championships saw Denver Roller Dolls take on Bay Area Derby Girls. Both teams were hungry for a win after losses the previous day, but it was Bay Area whose hunger paid off – fighting until the end to win 224-174.

MILWAUKEE, WI–‘All they do is win': those were the opening words of our Gotham preview last week and, indeed, they remain true. Gotham did stretch their three-year winning streak to 43-0 with tonight’s victory over Bay Area Derby Girls–but it was by no means the foregone conclusion many expected before the first whistle. The Golden Girls kept the score within a big jam or two’s reach throughout most of the game and ultimately handed Gotham their closest game since the 2011 WFTDA Championships, finishing the game trailing by just under 50 points at 125-174.

D1C Semifinal: Texas Boxes Denver, 298-129

MILWAUKEE, WI — The history of recent Denver / Texas matches — a 227-189 Texas win at this year’s Golden Bowl III and a 210-199 Denver win in the 3rd place game of last year’s WFTDA Championships — suggested that Saturday night’s Championships semifinal would be another narrow nail biter. It was not to be, though; this time out, Denver dug themselves an enormous hole by committing a whopping 13 jammer penalties against just 4 for Texas. That greatly smoothed the path for Texas to build a 84-point halftime lead and eventually cruise to a stunningly large victory at 298-129.

MILWAUKEE, WI – The last quarterfinal of the 2013 WFTDA Championships was a calculated, mechanical match up as WFTDA #2 Bay Area took on WFTDA #8 Windy City. While both teams demonstrated devastating defence, Bay Area’s held strong until the last whistle when they won 230-135.

D1C Quarterfinal: Gotham Flattens Ohio, 509-64

MILWAUKEE, WI–Despite Ohio and Gotham both being original members of the WFTDA, they had yet to play each other until today. Ohio came out guns blazing and gave Gotham everything they had, markedly improving their performance in the second half but fell deep into penalty trouble, losing three skaters to foul outs. Ohio capitalized on a few power Gotham jams and managed a handful of points on a stuck Suzy, but ultimately fell 509-64, the largest margin in Championship history.

MILWAUKEE, WI–Denver took the lead five minutes into their match against Angel City and held it throughout, taking lead jammer status reliably by pulling Angel City’s jammers to the sides and forcing them out in the opening seconds of many jams. Angel City, meanwhile, struggled to put up points when they weren’t on a power jam–and gave up plenty of power jams of their own. The combination of penalty control and strategy proved highly effective, letting Denver open up a 100-point margin ten minutes into the second half en route to a 200-125 victory.
