SACRAMENTO, CA–Minnesota came out of the gate strong in the last bout of day two and kept the first ten minutes pretty close, but Denver’s trademark demoralizing defense kicked in thereafter. That ultimately stopped up Minnesota’s scoring and kept the Mile High Club in control of the game. Denver extended their all-time record over MNRG to 4-0 with a solid 189-93 win.

D1S: #7 Tampa Vexes #6 Santa Cruz, 278-101

SACRAMENTO, CA–On paper this match looked set to be close, with the 7-seeded Tampa Roller Derby challenging 6 seed Santa Cruz, and the first fifteen minutes delivered on that promise. From then, though, it was all Tampa all the time as Santa Cruz struggled to keep their skaters on the track and break through the Tantrums’ heavy defence. Tampa punctuated their dominance emphatically, closing the game with a 10-minute 64-0 run to secure a 278-101 victory.

D1S: #5 Terminal Dismisses #8 Kansas City

SACRAMENTO, CA–Saturday’s third consolation game saw #5 seed Terminal City up against #8 seed Kansas City (KCRW). KCRW was trying to bounce back from a crushing 519-17 loss to top seed Gotham in Friday quarterfinals, while Terminal City was coming off a Saturday-morning 377-76 win over #9 seed Blue Ridge. After a relatively close first half, Terminal City delivered a much more effective second effort and their second rout of the day, whomping KCRW 263-115.

D1S: #1 Gotham Upends #4 Rat City

SACRAMENTO, CA–After #1 seed Gotham (WFTDA #1) took on Kansas City yesterday, many in the audience thought that the semi-final against #4 seed Rat City (WFTDA #16) would be the same level of rout that was witnessed the day before. Rat City, however, came out fighting and was able to put up an incredible fight against Gotham, but the final score ended up 297-92 in Gotham’s favour.

D1S: #5 Terminal Curtails #10 Blue Ridge 377-76

SACRAMENTO, CA–Day two of D1 playoffs kicked off with a matchup between #5 seed Terminal City (WFTDA #18) and #10 seed Blue Ridge (WFTDA #41). This was the first game of the consolation bracket; Blue Ridge lost to #7 seed Tampa 337-74 in the second game of the weekend, while Terminal City lost to #4 seed Rat City 191-142 in game six last night.

D1S: #3 Denver Rolls Over #6 Santa Cruz

SACRAMENTO, CA–The game between Denver and Santa Cruz went about as expected: Denver played their demoralizing defense and worked toward a solid win over the #25 ranked Boardwalk Bombshells. After Santa Cruz placed 2nd in Division 2 last year, the team started this year by playing up into D1 for a number of games–winning over Wasatch in March and losing by just 38 points to Rat City in June. Their tenacity definitely showed during this game, but their 260-48 loss to Denver showed that the top 40 has a wide range.
