After the quiet of Independence Day weekend, things are back into full swing this weekend as teams across WFTDA start their playoff preparations in earnest–and, perversely, play the first bouts that count towards 2015 playoff qualification.
MILWAUKEE, WI — After the intense and much closer than expected 174-125 semifinal between Bay Area and Gotham on Saturday night, many expected the Texas / Gotham championship matchup to be an anticlimax — when the teams met in June, Gotham had smoked Texas 313-66. This time, though, Texas was up to the challenge … almost. The Austin crew was within striking distance for the entirety of the bout, held a few short-lived leads and still had a fighting chance going into the last jam, but in the end Gotham was just too good, again. Gotham claimed their 4th WFTDA title and 3rd in a row, triumphing 199-173.
MILWAUKEE, WI–‘All they do is win': those were the opening words of our Gotham preview last week and, indeed, they remain true. Gotham did stretch their three-year winning streak to 43-0 with tonight’s victory over Bay Area Derby Girls–but it was by no means the foregone conclusion many expected before the first whistle. The Golden Girls kept the score within a big jam or two’s reach throughout most of the game and ultimately handed Gotham their closest game since the 2011 WFTDA Championships, finishing the game trailing by just under 50 points at 125-174.
