ASHEVILLE, NC — The third semifinal of the Asheville playoffs put the highly favored 2 seed, Rocky Mountain, up against 7 seed Houston, playing their second bout of the day. Houston seemed to not get the memo that the game was supposed to be a Rocky Mountain romp, though. Houston led for most of the first half and trailed by just 80-74 at the break, but a nightmare Houston penalty pileup with 22 minutes to play helped Rocky Mountain go on a 48-0 run that squelched Houston’s upset hopes. Rocky Mountain survived a scare to advance, 246-102.
ASHEVILLE, NC–Game two of the first day of Asheville’s iteration of the WFTDA Division 1 playoffs was a higher quality and much closer affair than the first; Columbia kept themselves in touch into the final few minutes before they started picking up game-chasing penalties. That let Houston close it out much more comfortably than the pattern of a back-and-forth game really deserved; they progress to a quarterfinal against Rocky Mountain at 6pm courtesy of a 197-112 win.
