D1S 7th: Santa Cruz Blows Away Kansas City, 171-122

SACRAMENTO, CA – In the match-up for 7th and 8th place, #6 seed Santa Cruz (WFTDA #25) came up against #8 Kansas City (WFTDA #33). Kansas City had come off a big loss to #5 seed Terminal City the previous day, just as Santa Cruz had come away from a big loss to Tampa. With Kansas City looking to better their seeding and Santa Cruz looking to not slip any further than one placing, both teams were out for a win in their final game of the weekend.

D1S: #7 Tampa Vexes #6 Santa Cruz, 278-101

SACRAMENTO, CA–On paper this match looked set to be close, with the 7-seeded Tampa Roller Derby challenging 6 seed Santa Cruz, and the first fifteen minutes delivered on that promise. From then, though, it was all Tampa all the time as Santa Cruz struggled to keep their skaters on the track and break through the Tantrums’ heavy defence. Tampa punctuated their dominance emphatically, closing the game with a 10-minute 64-0 run to secure a 278-101 victory.

D1S: #3 Denver Rolls Over #6 Santa Cruz

SACRAMENTO, CA–The game between Denver and Santa Cruz went about as expected: Denver played their demoralizing defense and worked toward a solid win over the #25 ranked Boardwalk Bombshells. After Santa Cruz placed 2nd in Division 2 last year, the team started this year by playing up into D1 for a number of games–winning over Wasatch in March and losing by just 38 points to Rat City in June. Their tenacity definitely showed during this game, but their 260-48 loss to Denver showed that the top 40 has a wide range.
